Who are we?

Laura Huxter

I have been teaching and tutoring secondary school science for nearly ten years. For the last five years this has been at the prestigious Uppingham School in Rutland. In January 2019 I decided that I really wanted to start my own business and offer students a more personal service; a 1-2-1 service that is so crucial to their academic development. In schools, it can be tricky to get the individual's needs just right and as every student is different, I wanted to build a tailored service to my students that was solely focussed on their goals. Six months later, Rosy Future Tutoring was launched! From my home, in a 13-18 boys' boarding house, I have built up this business to deliver a high quality and professional tutoring service in science education.

My philosophy:

As a teacher, I believe that every student is capable of achieving in science. The level of this achievement will differ from pupil to pupil, but it is the role of the teacher, tutor or facilitator to inspire a curiosity in the pupil that will help them unlock their own potential and achieve their personal goals. It has been said that stupidity, or insanity, is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results; well I believe this is only half true! As a learner, repetition is key to memorising facts, and repeating the knowledge in a variety of ways, again and again will eventually result in embedding the information in your memory. As a teacher, simply repeating the information and expecting every student to know what you are talking about IS insane. All learners are unique, with many different learning styles and many combinations of learning style. It is our job, as educationalists to provide the information in a different way if a learner is struggling. I try to incorporate as much variety, creativity and fun in to my teaching to ensure every learner is able to make progress.

My qualifications:

After gaining A-Levels in Biology, Geography and Chemistry, I attended Cardiff University where I studied BSc in Zoology for 4 years with an integrated year in industry. During this time, I worked as a tutor to local school children, tutoring at GCSE and A-Level. During my  year in industry I worked as a zookeeper in Jersey where a minor part of my role was working in the educational centre teaching school groups about conservation and animal biology.

After gaining my first degree, I studied for my PGCE in Secondary Science (Biology) at the University of York, one of the UK's leading institutes for curriculum development and research in secondary education. During this time I worked in a number of state schools in the York area.

Upon gaining my QTS, I moved to Uppingham, Rutland where I have remained for the last five years. I am a member of the Association for Science Education and the National Education Union.

I am currently pursuing a Masters in Science Education at the Institute of Education at University College London.

Teaching Experience

Over the course of my professional career I have taught a number of specifications for exam boards including Edexcel, AQA, OCR, WJEC and CIE. I have also taught on  BTEC programmes. More recently, I have taught for the new 9-1 GCSE exams and have assessed Core Practicals that are now a common feature of A-Level Biology. While as a private tutor, I have had experience tutoring students following the IB Diploma (SL and HL) in Biology. I have also had training in teaching pupils with a variety of special educational needs.

In August 2018, my GCSE Biology class achieved 100% A*-A grades (21 A*s and 1 A grade). I have also helped pupils move up from a D/E grade in mock exams to a B grade in their A-Level and from a C to an A*.

I have pastorally tutored pupils in schools at all ages from 13-18 and provided support for their co-curricular education as well as in their academic endeavours. As a 6th form tutor in the past, I have provided support with the UCAS application service across a number of subjects and as a subject specialist, I have assisted many pupils in their journey to study science at university with interview preparation and personal statement writing.

I have completed a number of training courses that centre around the safeguarding of children in education, including extensive training on pupils in a boarding environment. After just three years as a boarding house tutor, I was promoted to Deputy Housemistress in recognition of my skillset and professionalism. I have been a Deputy Housemistress of a 13-18 girls' boarding house, a Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator as well as coaching a number of sports. More recently, I have also taught Lifeskills and have undertaken coaching training from Graydin. I try to embed this coaching approach in all my teaching.

All of these roles have shaped my friendly, professional and adaptable approach with students to ensure you get the best results possible.

I promise to INSPIRE you, INNOVATE your thinking and your approach to science and EDUCATE you as you require to improve your progress in your chosen subject.
